Somerset votes to increase taxes; residents share mixed responses

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Increasing taxes was at the forefront of discussion at the Somerset Commissioners meeting on Tuesday. Residents shared their frustrations with commissioners, who explained why they say they are raising taxes. The decision goes both ways as there are people who say they understand, while others say they don’t want things to change. Somerset County commissioners passed a motion Tuesday to increase taxes for residents. “I want to know where the money is going,” one resident said.

Teen firefighter charged for starting multiple brush fires in Huntingdon Co.

Huntingdon Co., PA (WJAC) — Officials with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Bureau of Forestry have filed charges against a Huntingdon County teenager after he was accused of setting a series of brush fires earlier this year. Authorities say Adam Ewing, 18, of Three Springs, is a member of the Three Springs Volunteer Fire Company. Investigators say Ewing is alleged to have started a series of fires in the county in February and March, including one that injured three volunteer firefighters.

Three Allegheny County residents charged after alleged theft and high-speed chase in Centre County

Three Allegheny County residents have been charged after they allegedly stole from vehicles and led police on a chase in Centre County. At about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday police spotted a man outside of a vehicle along Airport Road in Ferguson Township. Officers were investigating reports of thefts from vehicles at Bernel Park. According to a probable-cause affidavit, when an officer activated his emergency lights, the man entered the vehicle, which then took off at a “high rate of speed.

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — Among the places reopening now are museums and historical sites. One of the area's best-known museums reflects how a prominent industrial segment of our region played a vital role in the growth of our country. As railroad tracks mapped America's expansion in the 1800's, one of the hubs was Altoona. The creation of Altoona came in the same decade, in the 1850's because of immigrants came to construct Horseshoe Curve.

Bellefonte man sentenced to 2 to 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to having 'sexual relations

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A Bellefonte man has been sentenced to serve 2 to 4 years in state prison after pleading guilty to having a "sexual relationship" with a teenage girl. Last November, police charged Akile Parker following an investigation into accusations that he had engaged in sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. Authorities say they discovered numerous sexually-explicit text messages between Parker and the victim. Police say the victim's mother allegedly confronted him about the accusations, at which time he denied them.
