JOHNSTOWN - Coney Island Lunch closed a month ago after 101 years of business, shocking a lot of people in town.
But another nearby business – Capri Pizza and Restaurant in downtown Johnstown - is trying to keep the tradition alive by offering Sundowners and hot dogs that are similar.
“People love them" hot dogs, Capri Pizza owner Shirley DiRosa said Friday. “If you’re from Johnstown, you know Coney Island. Everyone grew up on them.
“I think we’re really close (to Coney Island). Everyone tells us we’re right on.”
Capri Pizza has hired four people from Coney Island to help recreate the famous hot dogs and Sundowners.
The store, at 502 Main Street, is the only one of Capri’s three locations that sells them.
It is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
DiRosa said keeping people downtown is the main reason for bringing back the iconic recipes from the Coney Island restaurant just around the block.
She said they sell more than 100 hot dogs and Sundowners per day.
