The John Montgomery Ward Baseball Field at Governors Park in Bellefonte is getting some much-needed upgrades and improvements thanks to an $850,000 grant.

Upgrades include a new press box, dugouts, drainage system, electricity for the outfield scoreboard and a new turf infield similar to the field at Rogers Stadium.

"It will be similar to that type of turf, yes, and it will be just the infield only. The outfield is going to remain grass, natural grass. But the main problem right now is where they have issues that prevent them from playing games in the early spring because the water settles on the infield and doesn't drain."

The facility is primarily used by the Bellefonte Area high school baseball teams but is also used by the American Legion and county summer league teams, along with various tournaments.
