In Centre County, restoration work continues at a historic church that still draws attention, even though the last regular service there was nearly 100 years ago.

In a small cemetery next to Egg Hill Church, one of the gravestones is for a revolutionary war veteran.

The church was first built in the 1830's, was rebuilt in 1860 and got its name because it sits on a remote, Potter Township hill that the locals thought was egg shaped.

The church's legendary past includes ghost stories, and the bell caper, which is when the steeple bell was stolen and damaged almost 20 years ago, and then fixed and returned.

Now the fixing is focused on the church itself.

“The last regular service was in 1927. We still have an annual homecoming service in September, but the building needs work, the church is sagging.”

The church was on the sale block and slated to be demolished 40 years ago.

Then the Egg Hill Conservancy was formed and saved it.

Construction crews now shoring up the foundation, in hopes of reversing the deterioration.

“There are a number of projects here for scout groups. Eagle Scouts could work in a number of places and their help would be wonderful.”

A GoFundMe account has been established for the Egg Hill Church work.

It’s hoped that most of the renovations will be completed in time for the annual homecoming service in late September.
